The Cariñena grape is very important
for Catalonia. In Rioja the grape is called Mazuelo
and is also very important for the cuvée of Rioja
wines. The grape is also planted in Aragón. It
is very good for maturing in oak barrels, as it is high
in acidity and slow to mature. In Catalonia (Priorat)
they have recognized the potential of these old vines.
Cuvées based on this variety from the Priorat
are among some of the best Spain wines today.
